No, I shouldn’t feel guilty for getting my nails done. My nails are done every two weeks.
Not for compliments or aesthetics alone. But for me.
It’s a ritual that keeps me feeling held, clean, and like I haven’t disappeared under the stress that often comes with motherhood. For me, it’s about being well-maintained.
As a stay-at-home mom, people assume my time should revolve around everyone but me.
I hear the passive remarks:
“She’s home and still has time for gel extensions?”
“A nanny and a manicure routine?” And to that I say yes!
Because my life is full of responsibilities, it doesn’t mean I need to sacrifice everything that makes me feel like a woman.
I Take My Self-Maintenance Seriously
There’s this unspoken narrative that once you become a mother, your personal care needs to take a back seat, or worse, disappear completely.
But I reject that. I believe in maintaining the version of me that feels good, not just functions.
Because my nail appointment isn’t an indulgence. It’s a moment of stillness in a day often filled with movement and needs that aren’t my own.
Just like my morning stretch and my Pilates class, it’s a part of my self-care routine.
A part that belongs to me.
When I Feel Good, I Show Up Better
This isn’t about vanity.
When I feel cared for, I’m more patient, grounded, and ready to take on the day.
I’m not pouring from an empty cup or running on fumes because I’m regulated.
Some people meditate. Others run.
I sit in a salon chair, sip something iced, and walk away with glossy hands that gently remind me, I matter too.
I Don’t Ask Permission to Care for Myself
There’s freedom in not needing validation.
In not shrinking your needs just to meet someone else’s expectations of what a “good mom” should look like.
And my nails aren’t just a beauty choice. They’re a visual, physical reminder that I protect time for myself.
So no, I don’t feel guilty.
Not for pausing to recharge or choosing self-care in a world that often tells mothers to put themselves last.
Because this version of me, who smiles a little softer and feels a little brighter, was created on purpose.
